Definition of blotted 2. something that spoils or detracts from the beauty or worth of something. 3. a blemish or stain on ones character or reputation.
Isaiah 43:25 New International Version (NIV) I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.
Revelation 3:5 says, The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life.
In Job 31:7 (the King James Version) it is used figuratively of a moral defect; the Revised Version (British and American) has spot. Blot out (machah, to wipe out, exaleipho, to smear out), to obliterate or destroy: That a tribe be not blotted out (the King James Version destroyed, Judges 21:17).
At a time Judas name was written in the book of life (Luke 10:20) but at the end of his life, his name was blotted out of it. That names once entered into the book does not mean that the names cannot be removed. Only sin can cause ones name to be removed from the book of life.
We also know the beloved passage in Romans 8 that tells believers that we are more than conquerors, and that nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. If all true believers are conquerors, then Rev. 3:5 states that there will not be a believer blotted out of the book of life.
This idiom, first recorded in 1516, uses the verb to blot in the sense of making something illegible by spotting or staining it with ink. The New Testament has it (Acts 3:19): Repent ye that your sins may be blotted out.
It means we accept our wrongs and turn to do right, never to do our wrongs again. But while this word and its action are heavy, repentance also lightens our load because repentance results in a blessing. It results in the blotting out of our sin.
