Various methods for protein detection on Western blots are available, including colorimetric and chemiluminescent reagents for horseradish peroxidase and alkaline phosphatase. See a list of recipe calculators for various Western blotting buffers and blocking solutions.
Visualization of proteins in SDS-PAGE gels The two most commonly used methods are Coomassie and silver staining.
The main techniques for visualizing a western blot are colorimetric, chemiluminescence, and fluorescence. Colorimetric and chemiluminescence act by an enzymatic reaction either by horseradish peroxidase or alkaline phosphatase (also used in ELISA).
Most Western blot users visualize transferred proteins using stains, such as Ponceau S or Coomassie Blue. However, users of PVDF membrane have the opportunity to assess transfer efficiency using transillumination.
A northern blot is a laboratory method used to detect specific RNA molecules among a mixture of RNA. Northern blotting can be used to analyze a sample of RNA from a particular tissue or cell type in order to measure the RNA expression of particular genes.
Visualization of protein bands is carried out by incubating the gel with a staining solution. The two most commonly used methods are Coomassie and silver staining. Silver staining is a more sensitive staining method than Coomassie staining, and is able to detect 25 ng protein per band on a gel.
Western blotting is a laboratory technique used to detect a specific protein in a blood or tissue sample. The method involves using gel electrophoresis to separate the samples proteins. The separated proteins are transferred out of the gel to the surface of a membrane.
