The Rorschach test is a projective instrument designed by Hermann Rorschach in 1921 to detect mental health disorders and personality traits. It is used in various settings, including civil court, private practice, and institutions. The test consists of ten ink block cards where the individual being assessed shares what they see, with scoring based on normal versus abnormal responses. The test can be complex to score, but is utilized to determine mental health disorders and personality traits.

The Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) and Rorschach Inkblot Tests (RIT) are both projective types of psychological assessment. Projective assessments are those during which different settings, images, shapes, or words are shown to the examinee, or test taker.
Responses to the Rorschach test are typically scored on the basis of the location in the blot of the thing seen, the kind of stimulus characteristic emphasized (e.g., form or colour), and the content of the percept (e.g., animal).
In the Rorschach inkblot test, the person is asked to describe what they see in ambiguous inkblot images. The therapist then interprets the person's answers. This projective test often appears in popular culture and is frequently portrayed as a way of revealing a person's unconscious thoughts, motives, or desires.

The Rorschach is what psychologists call a projective test. The basic idea of this is that when a person is shown an ambiguous, meaningless image (ie an inkblot) the mind will work hard at imposing meaning on the image. That meaning is generated by the mind.
We're all familiar with Rorschach inkblots, but do psychologists still use them? Yes, though there is some debate over how useful the tests can be. Many psychologists use Rorschach inkblots to gauge personality and measure emotional stability.
In pathognomic signs in Rorschach responses, mutilation, response impotence, confabulation, perplexity, position response, contamination, and self reference was higher among patients with mania while perseveration response was higher in paranoid schizophrenia.
