Take a look at this image. What might this be? A frightening monster? Two friendly bears? Or something else entirely? For nearly a century, ten inkblots like these have been used as what seems like an almost mystical personality test. Long kept confidential for psychologists and their patients, the mysterious images were said to draw out the workings of a person’s mind. But what can inkblots really tell us, and how does this test work? Invented in the early 20th century by Swiss psychiatrist Hermann Rorschach, the Rorschach Test is actually less about the specific things we see, and more about our general approach to perception. As an amateur artist Hermann was fascinated by how visual perception varies from person to person. He carried this interest to medical school, where he learned all our senses are deeply connected. He studied how our process of perception doesn’t just register sensory inputs, but transforms them. And when he started working at a mental hospital in eas...

This test was designed to look for patterns of thought disorder in schizophrenia and has evolved to include other areas, like personality, emotional disorders, and intelligence. The Rorschach has been standardized using the Exner system and is effective in measuring depression, psychosis, and anxiety.
An ink blot test is a general category of projective tests. In projective tests, participants interpretations of ambiguous stimuli are used to analyze inner thoughts, feelings, and personality traits.
Research indicates that the Rorschach is a valid assessment tool (with validity akin to other personality measures, as well as measures of IQ).
Rorschach test, also called Rorschach inkblot test, projective method of psychological testing in which a person is asked to describe what he or she sees in 10 inkblots, of which some are black or gray and others have patches of colour. The test was introduced in 1921 by Swiss psychiatrist Hermann Rorschach.
The test was developed to identify serious mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety. It became clear over time, however, that the test was more useful for identifying personality traits rather than mental illnesses, although the test can still produce these results.
Most personality tests are objective in that they have standard methods of administration and scoring. However, in the late 1930s, the Rorschach was classified as a projective test.
All About the Rorschach Inkblot Test. This psychological test can help doctors analyze your personality and was once used to diagnose mental illnesses like schizophrenia. Doctors often use tools and rating systems to ensure accuracy and consistency when making a psychological diagnosis.
They studied 219 patients and reported a hit rate of 92%, sensitivity of 88%, and a specificity of 94%. These findings taken together confirm the validity of the Rorschach, but also highlight the importance of identifying the scoring system and population when evaluating the validity of the Rorschach.
There are generally two problems with these tests: scoring reliability and validity. A measure is reliable when different people who tabulate the responses arrive at similar conclusions; all three psychological measures showed problematic or even poor reliability, ing to the researchers.
Rorschach test is used for psychological evaluation and to provide data about cognition and personality variables such as motivations, response tendencies, cognitive operations, affectivity, and personal/interpersonal perceptions of an individual.
