A normal, also called negative, Pap smear result indicates that no evidence of abnormal cells were found in the sample. An abnormal, or positive, result on a Pap smear indicates that abnormal cells were detected in the sample and additional treatment or testing may be necessary.
High-Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesions (HSIL) means there are moderately or severely abnormal cervical cells that could become cancer in the future if not treated. Some lesions may be called precancer. Your health care provider will likely ask you to come back for a colposcopy, as explained on page 10. A long-lasting infection with a high-risk HPV type can lead to cell changes that, if not treated, may become cancer. High-risk HPV can cause cancers of the cervix, anus, oropharynx, vagina, vulva, and . There are about 12 types of high-risk HPV, but HPV types 16 and 18 cause most HPV-related cancers. A positive test result means that you have a type of high-risk HPV thats linked to cervical cancer. It doesnt mean that you have or will get cervical cancer. But its a warning that you could get cervical cancer. HPV test - Mayo Clinic Mayo Clinic Tests Procedures Mayo Clinic Tests Procedures
Higher risk: Your test results show either HPV infection with types 16 and/or 18, high grade cell changes on your cervix, or persistent infection with one of the other high-risk HPV types (not 16/18). It is important that you have a further follow-up because you may be at a high risk of developing cervical cancer.
What does this Pap test diagnosis mean? Negative for Intraepithelial Lesion or Malignancy (NILM): The Pap test revealed no abnormal cell changes. All squamous and glandular cells seen have normal-appearing cellular material.
A positive HPV test means you have one of the strains of HPV that increases your risk of developing cervical cancer. So, testing positive for HPV is the same as testing positive for high-risk HPV. HSIL changes seen on a Pap test can be CIN 2, CIN2/3, or CIN 3. CIN 1 changes are mild, or low grade. They usually go away on their own and do not require treatment. CIN 2 changes are moderate and are typically treated by removing the abnormal cells. CIN 3 changes are severely abnormal.
Results and Follow-Up Normal: No sign of disease. This means nothing irregular was found. Unclear: The lab couldnt determine whether the cells are normal or abnormal. Your healthcare provider may have you come back immediately or in six months for another Pap smear. Abnormal: The cells look different than they should.
