Headings and subheadings serve several purposes: They break up long texts to make them more readable. They help your reader locate the information they are most interested in. Headings and subheadings will vary depending on the documentation style (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago) and your instructors guidelines.
Index: An index lists every key term in a text and the pages where said terms are most prominent. An index is usually found after the main body. For example, a biology textbook might list the major terms within. Indexes generally bold the page number where the term first appears or is otherwise prominent.
A heading is a short phrase describing what the succeeding section is all about. You can think of it as the title of that particular section.
Also, you should always choose the number of heading tags in appropriate relation to the total amount of text. While too many headings are no longer of value to users, too few headings can make a text confusing and difficult to scan.
A caption explains what is shown in a picture or illustration. Captions help the reader understand information that may or may not be in the text.
Headings and subheadings are used to help the reader identify the main topic of the entire text (heading), and sections of the text (subheading). They allow the reader to predict what the text will be about.
Examples of text features include title, headings and subheadings, graphics (such as charts, pictures, and map), captions table of contents, timeline, index, and glossary.
