Number your headings Open your document that uses built-in heading styles, and select the first Heading 1. On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, choose Multilevel List. Under List Library, choose the numbering style you would like to use in your document.
Link to a heading within your document On the Insert tab group on the ribbon, select Link. This will open the Insert Hyperlink dialog box. On the right side of the dialog box, select This Document. Word will display a list of the existing headings in your document.
Tip: To show or hide the subheadings under a heading, click the arrow next to the heading. If you scroll through your document, Word highlights the heading in the Navigation pane to show you where you are. To go back to the top, select Jump to the beginning.
Headings structure the document and help the reader understand the organization and to find information they need. In Word, headings are set by using Styles. This will ensure that assistive technology, like screen readers, will notify the listener of the header.
Add a heading Select the text you want to use as a heading. On the Home tab, click the heading style you want to use. If you dont see the style you want, click a left, right, or down arrow to see more available styles.
Highlight the text you want to turn into a heading or subheading and make sure you are on the Home tab. In the Styles section of the ribbon, click on the heading level you want. Heading 1 is typically used for document titles. Heading 2 is generally used for subheadings.
The Navigation pane displays paragraphs whose Outline level (Paragraph dialog box) is set to something other than Body Text. The easiest approach is to apply the built-in headings to text; you can do so via the Styles group on the Home tab of the ribbon or via the Apply Styles pane (Ctrl+Shift+S).
