There are six levels of numbered headings in XHTML with h1 as the most important and h6 as the least. XHTML does not itself cause section numbers to be generated from headings.
HTML defines six levels of headings. A heading element implies all the font changes, paragraph breaks before and after, and any white space necessary to render the heading. The heading elements are H1, H2, H3, H4, H5, and H6 with H1 being the highest (or most important) level and H6 the least.

The h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6 tags are used to create text headers for a document. They can display the header text in one of six different sizes. h1 is the largest size and, as the integer number increases to h6, the text size becomes progressively smaller.
