A section of tendon from another part of the patients body is cut to create a graft. Graft can be used from the patients iliotibial band, hamstring tendons, or kneecap tendons (quadriceps or patellar tendons). Over time, the graft will grow into the bone.
Imaging studies such as MRI can help assess the integrity of the reconstructed ACL graft and identify signs of graft failure, such as graft laxity or abnormal signal intensity.
Double-leg quarter squats provide an important transition to strengthen further your quadriceps, gluteal muscles and hamstrings. They also enable you to improve weight-bearing movements through your knees.
Although no study seems to provide a consensus on what prehabilitation encompasses, the basic components should include improvement in knee ROM, quadricep strengthening, and proprioception. The duration can be as short as 3 weeks, but the more successful programs last at least 4-6 weeks.
How soon should you get ACL surgery? For a complete tear of the ACL, reconstruction surgery is generally scheduled between 3 to 6 weeks after the injury occurs. This allows inflammation in the area to subside and allows time for physical therapy sessions to focus on restoring normal knee flexion and extension.
Closing Remarks on BFR for ACL Rehab But early on, when the patient cant safely load their system mechanically, we can use BFR to load their system metabolically. This can be surgeon dependent, but we like to start using BFR cuffs as soon as 1 week post op, and typically up until 12 weeks post-op.
Pre Op Checklist: Wash operative leg and feet with soap and water to remove all dirt and skin oil. No lotions the day before surgery. Please trim toenails and clean dirt from underneath nails. Wear loose fitting clothes the day of surgery.
Range of Motion (ROM) Knee ROM in flexion and extension are critical to the long term outcome of your knee surgery. The goal is to have the knee as straight as the other leg and bending to at least 90 degrees.
