XML Naming Rules Element names are case-sensitive. Element names must start with a letter or underscore. Element names cannot start with the letters xml (or XML, or Xml, etc) Element names can contain letters, digits, hyphens, underscores, and periods. Element names cannot contain spaces.
XML Tag names cannot contain any of the characters :! #$%()*+,/;? @[\]^`{|}~, nor a space character, and cannot begin with -, ., or a numeric digit. Only the following characters produce error 13640 when the WRITE-XML and WRITEXML-SCHEMA methods are executed: #$% and the space character since OpenEdge 11.6.
The first line of an XML document should be a declaration that this is an XML document, including the version of XML being used. It is also useful to include a statement of the encoding used in the file.
The underscore must be used for readability in naming simple elements, with no spaces or hyphens between words; lower camel case cannot be used (for example, supplierName). Lower case must be used. The simple element names must not be more than 30 characters in length.
XML documents are strictly text files. In the context of data transport, the phrase XML document refers to a file or data stream containing any form of structured data. Examples include e-commerce transactions, server APIs, mathematical equations, customer information, and inventory status.
It must contain only alphabetical characters, decimal digits, underscores, periods (.), and hyphens (-). It must not be more than 1,024 characters long. Colons that appear in names indicate namespace demarcation. Therefore, you can use colons only to specify an XML namespace for a particular name.
The XML declaration appears as the first line of an XML document. Its use is optional.
