Imaging studies such as MRI can help assess the integrity of the reconstructed ACL graft and identify signs of graft failure, such as graft laxity or abnormal signal intensity.
Results. A total of 132 ACL injuries were reported in 108 athletes (77 female, 31 male). ACL injuries accounted for 6.4% of all reported knee injuries, with almost half (48.5%) of the ACL injuries reported to occur during training.
The Lachman and anterior drawer tests are both clinically useful and highly specific, although the anterior drawer is less sensitive than Lachman. However, the lever test should have a more limited role, and findings should be interpreted with caution.
Signs of ACL graft failure? The signs of ACL graft failure can include swelling, pain within the knee, locking within the knee, a mechanical block (which can be due to a bucket-handle tear of the meniscus), lack of full motion, and difficulty with twisting, turning, and pivoting.
In the long term, the mean lifetime cost to society for a typical patient undergoing ACL reconstruction was $38,121 compared with $88,538 for rehabilitation. ACL reconstruction resulted in a mean incremental cost savings of $50,417 while providing an incremental QALY gain of 0.72 compared with rehabilitation.
With an ACL tear, in young people or active older adults, surgical repair is typically necessary after an ACL tear. The biggest issue with a surgical repair is that it takes about 9 months to rehabilitate afterwards. Most people would agree that the ACL ligaments is the worst ligament to tear in the knee.
Thigh muscle injuries (hamstrings 12%, 188/1527, and quadriceps 11%, 171/1527) were the most frequent injury, while anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury had the highest burden (38.0 days lost per 1000 hours, IQR 29.252.1) with median days lost of 292 (IQR 246334) days.
Most people who tear their ACL make a full recovery and resume playing sports with no long-term consequences. The recovery time for a torn ACL is usually six to nine months.
