A normal, also called negative, Pap smear result indicates that no evidence of abnormal cells were found in the sample. An abnormal, or positive, result on a Pap smear indicates that abnormal cells were detected in the sample and additional treatment or testing may be necessary.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
The stain should result in cells that are fairly transparent so even thicker specimens with overlapping cells can be interpreted. Cell nuclei should be crisp, blue to black on color and the chromatin patterns of the nucleus should be well defined. Cell cytoplasm stains blue-green and keratin stains orange in color.
Pap Smear Results Your doctor will get your results either negative (normal) or positive (abnormal) within a few days. A negative result is a good thing. That means your doctor didnt find any precancerous or cancerous cells on your cervix.
What are the different types of abnormal results? Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) High-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) Atypical squamous cells, cannot exclude HSIL (ASC-H) Atypical glandular cells (AGC)
What do my cervical screening results mean? No HPV found - means you dont have high risk HPV. HPV found with no cell changes - means you have high-risk HPV, but you do not have changes to your cervical cells. HPV found with cell changes - means you have high risk HPV and cervical cell changes.
A Pap test result can be normal, unclear, abnormal, or unsatisfactory. A normal (or negative) result means that no cell changes were found on your cervix. It is common for test results to come back unclear. An abnormal result means that cell changes were found on your cervix.
There are actually lots of reasons your Pap smear may come back abnormal. You may have an infection or inflammation, growth or cysts, changes in your hormones (usually due to pregnancy or menopause), problems with your immune system related to diabetes, HIV, or autoimmune diseases.
