An exclamation point beside Recommended actions means that Google recommends you take active steps to secure your account. The level of severity is based on their color: blue for security tips, yellow for important steps and red for urgent ones.
Outlook uses the red exclamation point as a visual indication to show that the sender has designated an email message as High Importance. This means that the sender thinks you should give the message top priority in your inbox over other emails and that it needs your immediate attention.
Google does try to alert you if it detects suspicious activity or potential hacking attempts on your account. Google often sends you an email or notification if someone tries to sign in to your account from a new device or location, especially if it seems unusual.
From the Accounts View, an exclamation point (red or yellow) will appear at the top right corner of the account card. A yellow alert indicates that an action is required from the user (i.e. answer a security question). A red alert indicates a problem with the connection to the account.
To remove the exclamation point: Click on the account to open the account detail view. Then click on the red or yellow warning message in the Link Status field. The Manage Institutions page will appear. Once the action/connection has been addressed the exclamation mark will disappear.
Google will alert users with a red, yellow, or able exclamation point to recommend when immediate action should be taken regarding their account.
