The backslash ( \ ) is a typographic and/or keyboard mark that is used in some programming languages and other computing contexts. In Windows systems, for example, the backslash is used to separate elements of a file path, for example: C:\Documents\User\File.
Markdown allows you to use backslash escapes to generate these literal characters. In other words, you must type a backslash character before typing certain literal characters (listed below). For example, if you wanted to surround a word with literal asterisks, you can use backslashes before the asterisks, like this
Notes, warnings, and callouts To add a note, create a GFM blockquote whose first line is [! NOTE] . To add a warning, create a GFM blockquote whose first line is [! WARNING] . To add a callout, create a GFM blockquote whose first line is [! CALLOUT] .
The way to escape a special character is to add a backslash before it, e.g., I do not want \italic text\ here . Similarly, if # does not indicate a section heading, you may write \# This is not a heading .
An exclamation mark: ! ; followed by a set of square brackets, containing the alt attribute text for the image; followed by a set of parentheses, containing the URL or path to the image, and an optional title attribute enclosed in double or single quotes.
To display a literal character that would otherwise be used to format text in a Markdown document, add a backslash ( \ ) in front of the character. \* Without the backslash, this would be a bullet in an unordered list.
To create a fenced code block that spans multiple lines of code, set the text inside three or more backquotes ( ``` ) or tildes ( ~~~ ).
It is sometimes called a hack, whack, escape (from C/UNIX), reverse slash, slosh, downwhack, backslant, backwhack, bash, reverse slant, reverse solidus, and reversed virgule.
