Thermography is a print method that creates a raised effect. A flat printed piece is sprinkled with thermography powder.
Whereas embossing pushes the paper up to create a wonderful texture, thermography builds texture with a special type of ink. Also called Raised-Ink, thermography results in a shiny and raised style of printing. Unlike with embossing, when you look at the back of the paper, it is smooth.
Both produce printing you can feel. Thermography feels more plasticky whereas engraving has a matte ink feel.
Unlike printing methods like thermography that can appear flat, letterpress has an intrinsic texture that achieves the look and feel of a luxury printed piece. The impression left by the letterpress process results in a tangible texture and dimension on the paper.
Beginning with the finest sandpaper start to buff the engraved area, stopping to wash and buff dry at regular intervals and increasing the grit until the engraving is gone. If even the most coarse grit sandpaper is not removing the engraving, use a metal file.
Thermal printing uses a heated thermal printhead to allow text or an image to be created on a surface, by heat reaction or heated ribbon application. As opposed to traditional printing methods (like offset), digital printing uses inkjet or laser (or even thermal) methods to apply graphics to the paper.
The primary difference between them is that engraving is a physical process, and etching is a chemical process. An engraver uses sharp tools to cut lines directly into a surface, while an etcher burns lines into a surface with acid.
Sanding or Polishing the Error If the engraved mistake is shallow and on a suitable material such as wood, acrylic or some metals then you can simply sand and polish it away. Make sure you use masking tape to protect the area around the mistake before sanding with coarse grit sandpaper.
