This summer, children in the Rio Grande Valley attended a UTRGV chess camp to enhance their skills. Two participants, savvy Fei Yan and Ivan Lopez, eagerly joined to learn from top players. The camp, led by UTRGV chess program manager Grandmaster Alex Mistah, welcomed eighteen students. Participants engaged in various activities, including tournaments and puzzle-solving, while receiving guidance from fellow Grandmaster Vladimir Beliavsky, part of UTRGV’s national collegiate chess championship team. Mistah noted that many current team members began their journey at similar camps, highlighting the growth and development of young chess players through these experiences.
