Using the Get-Date Cmdlet to Retrieve Current and Past Dates The Get-Date cmdlet is used to retrieve the current date and time in PowerShell. However, you can also use it to retrieve past dates by subtracting a specific number of days, months, or years using the subtract operator (-).
Get-Date uses the UFormat parameter with format specifiers to display the current system date and time. The format specifier %Z represents the UTC offset of -07. The $Time variable stores the current system date and time. $Time uses the ToUniversalTime() method to convert the time based on the computers UTC offset.
Say you want to print April 23, 1978 as dd/mm/yyyy: $ date -d April 23, 1978 +%d/%m/%Y $ date -j -f %INPUTFORMAT datestring +%OUTPUTFORMAT $ TZ=EDT date -d April 23, 2078 5:15:10 PM EDT +%Y/%m/%d $ TZ=TIMZZONEHERE
The Set-Date cmdlet changes the system date and time on the computer to a date and time that you specify. You can specify a new date and/or time by typing a string or by passing a DateTime or TimeSpan object to Set-Date . To specify a new date or time, use the Date parameter.
The Get-Date cmdlet gets a DateTime object that represents the current date or a date that you specify. Get-Date can format the date and time in several .NET and UNIX formats. You can use Get-Date to generate a date or time character string, and then send the string to other cmdlets or programs.
The number one command to consider when working with dates and times in PowerShell is the Get-Date command. By running Get-Date just by itself, you will output a DateTime object with the current date and time. Using the Get-Member command, we can see that the output is a System.
PowerShell provides several options for converting Get-Date to a string. One of the commonly used methods is the ToString() method, which allows you to specify the desired format. This will convert the current date and time to a string format in the format yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss .
Change the time by typing the command time HH:MM:SS AM/PM. Change the date by typing the command date Enter MM-DD-YYYY.
