In most cases, an AFP test is done this way: Blood is usually taken from a vein between the 15th and 20th weeks of pregnancy. The blood sample is then sent off to be checked at a lab. Results of the tests are usually ready in 1 to 2 weeks or less, depending on the lab.
It is a blood test done between the 15th and 20th weeks of pregnancy that allows us to measure certain substances that come from the developing fetus and placenta and are present in a mothers blood.
Generally, an AFP level between 0 ng/mL to 10 ng/ml or even up to 40 ng/mL can be normal for adults But normal levels vary, so talk with your healthcare provider about what your results mean for you. An extremely high level of AFP in your bloodgreater than 400 ng/mLcould be a sign of liver tumors.

The test may be performed at around 10 weeks (combined first trimester screening test) or between 14 and 20 weeks (second trimester maternal serum screening test). In most cases that are identified as increased chance, the baby does not have Down syndrome, Edward syndrome or a neural tube defect.
Maternal serum AFP levels rise from the normal non-pregnancy level of 0.20 ng/mL to about 250 ng/mL at 32 weeks gestation. If the fetus has an open neural tube defect, AFP is thought to leak directly into the amniotic fluid, causing unexpectedly high concentrations of AFP.
The AFP test may be performed between the 14th and 22nd weeks of pregnancy, however, it seems to be most accurate during the 16th to 18th week. Your levels of AFP vary during pregnancy so accurate pregnancy dating is imperative for more reliable screening results.
If you are pregnant, AFP test is routinely offered between the 15th and 20th week of pregnancy. Your provider may especially recommend the test if you: Have a family history of birth defects.
