There are a range of different academic conventions that can be relatively confusing but sticking with saying that someone has a PhD in a particular subject is the most widely accepted way of talking about a PhD student.
John Smith III or John Smith, III? A. Traditionally, it would be John Smith, Jr., and John Smith III. But beginning with the fourteenth edition of The Chicago Manual of Style (1993), the recommendation is to use no commas in either case (see paragraph 6.43 of the seventeenth edition):
Levin, MD, section chief, Oncology. Formal titles that appear before a persons name are in uppercase: Oncology Section Chief Stanley A. Levin, MD. Place a comma after the last credential after a persons name if including their title, department or other information: Stanley A. Levin, MD, section chief, Oncology.
Academic Abbreviations: When an academic abbreviation such as Ph. D. is used to introduce someone, use a comma before and after the abbreviation. John Snow, Ph. D., and Jane Doe, Ph.
Commas with Degrees and Titles. THE RULE: A comma separates initials, degrees, or titles from a name and from the rest of the sentence.
When writing about someones PhD, the correct way is to write the term in full and capitalize each letter. This should be done for all academic degrees, not just PhDs. For example, it would be Doctor of Philosophy or PhD instead of Ph. D., Dr., or DPhil.
In English, PhD can be written with or without periods; both are correct. The trend today is to drop periods with abbreviations of academic degrees. However, many sources, including the Canadian Oxford Dictionary, still recommend the use of periods: Ph. D.
The correct way to punctuate MD (Medical Doctor) is M.D. Note: In English, there are two main punctuation styles: British and American. They mostly differ in how they treat quotation marks, particularly when combined with other punctuation marks.
