Use commas after introductory a) clauses, b) phrases, or c) words that come before the main clause. Example: In the beginning, there was light. Use a pair of commas in the middle of a sentence to set off clauses, phrases, and words that are not essential to the meaning of the sentence.
Commas should be used when three or more items in a series are listed. A comma should be placed between each of the three items (it is also acceptable to leave out the comma between the second-to-last item and the last item in the series). Items in the series may consist of a word, clause, or phrase.
When using a comma in a series, the comma must be behind each item on the list except the last item. A comma placed before the last item on the list that is called the Oxford comma. Comma in series: Riding my bike, throwing my ball and swimming in my pool are activities that I enjoy.
Here are four simplified comma rules to tell you where and when to use a comma. Signal Beginning. Rule: Commas signal where the main statement in a sentence begins. Change Direction. Rule: Commas signal a change in the direction or focus of a sentence. Separate Supplemental Information. Distinguish Complete Statements.
As mentioned above, when you are listing three or more items, commas should separate each element of the list. However, the final commathe one that comes before the andis optional. This comma is called the serial comma or the Oxford comma. Whether or not you use the serial comma is a style choice.
3. Use a comma between all items in a series. Rule: Use a comma to separate each item in a series; a series is a group of three or more items having the same function and form in a sentence.
However, a comma should separate a direct greeting and a persons name. So if you were to write Good morning, Mrs. Johnson, youd have to place a comma between Good morning and Mrs. Johnson.
Commas (Eight Basic Uses) Use a comma to separate independent clauses. Use a comma after an introductory clause or phrase. Use a comma between all items in a series. Use commas to set off nonrestrictive clauses. Use a comma to set off appositives. Use a comma to indicate direct address. Use commas to set off direct quotations.
