Tables may be easier to understand by including total values in lines and columns. These values should agree with the sum of the lines and/or columns, as appropriate, whereas relative values should be in ance with the exposure variable, i.e., the sum of the values mentioned in the lines should total 100%.
All graphs, diagrams and images should be titled as Figures. These will be numbered consecutively throughout the dissertation: Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3, and so on. After the numbering, there should be a short and concise title. Titles for figures appear below the figure itself.
When citing a table or a figure in text, refer to it by its number, such as Table 3 or Figure 2. Do not refer to it by its position relative to the text (e.g., the figure below) or its page number (e.g., the table on page 12); these will change when your paper is typeset, assuming you are writing a draft
Tables display information arranged in rows and columns in a grid-like format, while figures convey information visually, and take the form of a graph, diagram, chart, or image.
For most graphs, give a brief description including the title and axis labels and mention trends not already described in the text. For simple charts, state the actual data points. For more complex charts, an ideal description would include the data in a table or list.
Avoid too many lines in a table. Often it is sufficient to just have three horizontal lines in a table; one below the title; one dividing the column titles and data; one dividing the data and footnotes. Vertical lines are not necessary. It will only make a table more difficult to read (compare Tables 1A and 1B).
Tables should be: Centered on the page. Numbered in the order they appear in the text. Referenced in the order they appear in the text. Labeled with the table number and descriptive title above the table. Labeled with column and/or row labels that describe the data, including units of measurement.
Research papers are often based on copious amounts of data that can be summarized and easily read through tables and graphs. When writing a research paper, it is important for data to be presented to the reader in a visually appealing way.
