If you simply want the character to be printed just as any other letter, include a \ in front of the character. For example, \$ will produce $ in your output. The exception to the rule is the \ itself because \\ has its own special meaning. A \ is produced by typing $\backslash$ in your file.
The proper LaTeX command for underscore is \textunderscore , but the LaTeX 2.09 command \ is an established alias.
Use the backslash to escape, i.e., \ .
To underline text use the \underline command: Some of the greatest discoveries in \underline{science} were made by accident. Open this LaTeX fragment in Overleaf.
If you want different spacing, LaTeX provides the following four commands for use in math mode: \; - a thick space. \: - a medium space. \, - a thin space. \! - a negative thin space.
underscore Control the behaviour of in text With the package, \ in text mode (i.e., \textunderscore) prints an underscore so that hyphenation of words either side of it is not affected; a package option controls whether an actual hyphenation point appears after the underscore, or merely a break point.
Outside math mode you need to write \ to use or typeset an underscore, as shown in the corrected version of the example: To use the math-mode underscore character in a file name, write it like this: math\example. tex.
\ (Backslash): The escape character in LaTeX. Used to begin commands ( \section ) and to print special characters (e.g., \% to print % ).
