A successful blood specimen collection begins with these necessary supplies-- a newborn screening specimen collection kit; a warm, moist soft cloth or a heel warmer; alcohol-wetted pads or cotton balls; gloves; a heel lancet with a tip depth of 1 millimeter and a length of no more than 2.5 millimeters; sterile gauze pads; and aftercare supplies, such as Band-Aids
