All graphs, diagrams and images should be titled as Figures. These will be numbered consecutively throughout the dissertation: Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3, and so on. After the numbering, there should be a short and concise title. Titles for figures appear below the figure itself.
Your figure title should include details of what your figure is presenting, including the variables, units of measurement, statistics, significance level, and sample size. Error bars: When graphing mean values, in either a dot/line or a bar graph, include error bars to indicate standard deviation or standard error.
Effective captions should: Serve as a brief, yet complete, explanation of the data. Can be written as full sentences (using sentence case capitalization) or as fragments (using title case capitalization). Tell the reader what to look for. Clearly indicate what results are shown in the context of the study.
The title of your graph is up to you to decide. Your title should relate to data youre visualizing. For example, we might call our graph something like Absorbance vs. Concentration. When deciding how to title your graph, remember this: your title should relate your vertical axis Label and horizontal axis label.
Traditionally, captions did not overtly state the main finding of the data being presented. Instead, a typical figure caption would only indicate the variables being discussed, for example, Scatterplot showing the relationship between X and Y.
Figure captions They should describe the data shown, draw attention to important features contained within the figure, and may sometimes also include interpretations of the data. Figures are typically read from the bottom up, so captions go below the figure and are left-justified.
The title should be a concise description of what is being graphed (e. g., Pressure as a Function of Temperature for Nitrogen). Usually you do not need to describe in the title the units used in the graph, but there are some instances where this is necessary.
Ideally, control samples should be run on the same blot or gel as the experiment. Relevant controls must be included in each figure. A figure containing multiple blots or gels should clearly display the different images as separate panels and this should also be noted in the figure legend.
