Essential Components: Figure Number. Figures should be numbered using the order in. Figure Title. A figure title informs the viewer what they should. Figure Description. The figure description follows the title and should include any information readers may need to properly understand the figure.
Tips for writing photo captions that will enhance your content Start by checking your facts. Use conversational language. Use the present tense. Use humor when appropriate. Add new information. Let interest determine the length. Use quotes when possible. Include descriptions.
A common format is to begin the caption with an identifier in bolded font (e.g., Figure 2.). Continue with a short informative descriptor (often a fragment) that can be understood apart from the text. The descriptor is usually written in sentence case and often ends with a period (e.g., Figure 2.
Captions should be concise but comprehensive. They should describe the data shown, draw attention to important features contained within the figure, and may sometimes also include interpretations of the data. Figures are typically read from the bottom up, so captions go below the figure and are left-justified.
A brief caption must appear below each figure, preceded by the figure number in bold. The reader should be able to understand the caption without reference to the text.
Caption Location Table captions should appear above the associated table. Figure captions should appear below the associated figure.
