Which file is best for photography JPEG or TIFF? A TIFF will enable you to store richer, more detailed images. Its good practice to save your original (or source) photos as TIFF files. JPEGs, meanwhile, might be a better choice for exporting your finished edits because theyre easier to share and print.
A TIFF will enable you to store richer, more detailed images. Its good practice to save your original (or source) photos as TIFF files. JPEGs, meanwhile, might be a better choice for exporting your finished edits because theyre easier to share and print.
Compression. Both PNG and TIFF files benefit from lossless compression, meaning that no matter how often you save, open, or resize them, theyll maintain their quality.
No, they are essentially the same file type; the only difference is that one acronym (TIF) is short for the other acronym (TIFF). So regardless of which acronym you use, both refer to the same image format. The two acronyms are used interchangeably, so theres no need to worry about which one youre using.
JPG images are a lossy compression, but when you convert files from TIFF to JPG properly you still get a good quality image at a much lower file size, better for use online or as an email attachment.
If youre going to do heavy editing, its better to shoot in RAW. But if youre going to be sharing the file, then its a good idea to convert it to a TIFF. Does TIFF lose quality? The short answer is no, TIFF doesnt compress your images and you dont lose quality every time you open and re-save the file.
Disadvantages of TIFF files. They can take up valuable space on your drive. Their size makes them difficult to share or send to contacts or clients. Their high quality makes them a poor choice for website design, since detailed images can slow a websites loading speed.
TIFFs are typically uncompressed files or use lossless compression. This results in very high quality images and, subsequently, very large file sizes. Note: a JPEG that is converted into a TIFF will not have a lossless image quality.
