weamp;#39;re going to go through the fitting of the titanium 2p peak this is a sample of titanium apatite composite and as you can see thereamp;#39;s a number of different oxidation states that are present this is a good example for the transition metals it shows a number of things we have gonna have an asymmetric peak for the metal we have spin-orbit splitting going on and so we may have to deal with multiple it splitting for some of the states and so weamp;#39;re gonna go through those things this sample has already been charged corrected to 2 carbon 1 s set to 2 84.8 evie for adventitious carbon so weamp;#39;re already done that the first thing weamp;#39;re going to do is create a background region go to components and we want to start adding in and sub components so the first thing weamp;#39;re going to put in is the spin-orbit doublets for the metallic peak so letamp;#39;s add two peaks and weamp;#39;ll just slide them around so that we theyamp;#39;re more where they shou

XPS is a powerful quantitative technique for determining the electronic structure, elemental composition, and oxidation states of an element in a material.
Here, higher binding energies mean also higher oxidation states. This is known as chemical shift. A good starting point for a literature research for the peak shifts of your material is the XPS database of NIST:
These satellite peaks arise from localized charge transfer excitations that accompany the creation of a core hole 2. The presence and intensity of these satellite peaks can be used to determine the covalent character of the interaction between the Cd cation and the oxygen ligands 3.
This chemical shift is dependent on the electronegativity (electron withdrawing power) of atoms bonded to carbon. Oxygen having more electron withdrawing power than carbon or hydrogen results in an increase in the C-O binding energy relative to C-C. Multiple bonds to electronegative atoms as in O-C=O.
In general, it is known that for most materials, when the XPS peak becomes higher shift, it means strong bonding with oxidation, and conversely, when the electron concentration increases, it is known that it is referred to as lower shift.
Shake-up: The outgoing electron interacts with a valence electron and. excites it (shakes it up) to a higher energy level. As a consequence the. energy core electron is reduced and a satellite structure appears a few eV below (KE scale) the core level position.
Shake-up occurs when an electron within the emitting atom is pro- moted to a higher level during the photoionisation process, thus the kinetic energy of ejected electron is reduced by the amount of energy required for the transition and therefore the main photoe- lectron peak is accompanied by a satellite peak at an
For some materials, plasmon loss peaks may occur. These involve an enhanced probability for loss of a specific amount of energy due to the interaction between the photoelectron and other electrons.
