The physical examination remains a mainstay of orthopaedic diagnosis, and multiple physical examination maneuvers can be used to evaluate a possible anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Historically, the most commonly used tests are the Lachman test, the anterior drawer test, and the pivot shift test.
The Lachman test is a specific clinical exam technique used to evaluate patients with a suspected anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. The test relies on proper positioning and technique and is regarded as the most sensitive and specific test for diagnosing acute ACL injuries.
Mucoid degeneration of the ACL (MDACL, ACL ganglion cysts) is a disease involving ACL thickening due to accumulation of mucoid substance and fiber degeneration with possible formation of ganglions.
History: One of the most common knee injuries is an ACL sprain or tear. Typically, injury occurs during activity/sports participation that involves sudden changes in the direction of movement, abrupt stopping or slowing down while running, or jumping and abnormal landing.
If you continue to use your knee after an ACL injury, you only make the problem worse. You fuel ongoing inflammation, the ligament continues to weaken, and a partial tear is likely to turn into a complete rupture. The ACL ligament takes a long time to heal even when you seek early treatment.
An ACL injury often occurs during sports when your foot is firmly planted and a sudden force hits your knee while your leg is straight or slightly bent. This can happen when you change direction rapidly or land from a jump.
ACL injuries usually cause a lot of swelling, which can cause the knee to throb and ache. You can hurt yourself more and aggravate the injury by walking on it without crutches or support prior to treatment and during the initial recovery period.
ACL injuries often happen during sports and fitness activities that can put stress on the knee: Suddenly slowing down and changing direction (cutting) Pivoting with your foot firmly planted. Landing awkwardly from a jump.
