An icon badge displays as a small circle or a number on the corner of an apps icon. If an app has one or more notifications, it will have a badge. Some apps will combine multiple notifications into one and may only show the number 1. Other times, the badge may go away if you clear your notifications.
The count appears only if Badge app icon is selected for Mail in Notifications settings. To open Notifications settings, choose Apple menu System Settings, then click Notifications in the sidebar.
Remove an item from the Dock: Drag the item out of the Dock until Remove is shown. Only the alias is removed; the actual item remains on your Mac. If you accidentally remove an app icon from the Dock, its easy to put it back (the app is still on your Mac). Open the app to make its icon appear again in the Dock.
Keep in mind that if you click the Close button in the top-left corner of an apps window, the window closes, but the app remains open (a small dot below the apps icon in the Dock indicates that the apps open).
Only a tiny black dot beneath a programs icon tells you that its openand you can even hide that, if you want. (Choose System PreferencesDock, and turn off Show indicators for open applications.) Apple has made it as easy as possible to like the Dock.
Why is there a black dot under Finder on the Mac? As we have seen, Finder on the Mac is always open, as it is part of the operating system. On the Mac, available Apps are marked with a black dot below them. Thats why Finder on the Mac always has a black dot under it.
An orange dot next to the Control Center icon in the menu bar indicates the microphone on your Mac is in use; a green dot indicates a camera is in use; a purple dot indicates the system audio is being recorded; and an arrow indicates your location is in use. Only one privacy indicator dot is shown at a time.
Thats the new feature in Android O called dots. its function is to show that a new notification is their for that app. Those are notifications. Like new message, some kind of in-app update that happened, new email etc.
