DITA includes three main topic types: Task, Concept, and Reference. Tasks are used to describe how to perform a procedure. Concepts present descriptive information so the reader can understand the background and context of a subject. Reference topics provide detailed facts, often in a table.
Information Types DITA provides three base topic types (concept, task, and reference), a number of extended topic types, and the capability to create new topic types through specialization.
Concept and Reference topics contain descriptive elements of the content while a Task topic contains procedures to help users perform a small or major action. All the three follow standard defined rules that you need to apply while creating topics.
The DITA Specification 1.3 provides the following definition of Reference topics: Reference topics are specialized from topic. They contain the standard topic elements, including title, short descriptions or abstract, a prolog, a body, and related links.
Reference that describes the circumscription of the Element. While it is ideal, it is not required that the concept reference be the original description of the Element; however, the reference should provide enough information to describe the bounds of the Element.
