Power Outage Tips Keep freezers and refrigerators closed. Use a generator, but ONLY outdoors and away from windows. Do not use a gas stove or oven to heat your home. Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges.
That means a blackout could last minutes to even days. Although many people recover from blackouts, one episode can be fatal.
A rolling power outage allows the available energy supply to be shared among customers. It also protects sensitive sites like hospitals, from power loss. If the grid was not protected against these potential overloads, the damage could cause a complete shutdown of the grid. Then everyone could be left without power.
Utility workers can fix a minor incident, such as a fallen power line, in around 2-3 hours. But when the cause of a blackout is severe weather or a natural disaster, you can expect to be out for several days and even months in some extreme cases.
Among the longest blackouts in history, the one in Auckland stands out. In 1998, parts of the downtown of this New Zealand city were without electricity for five weeks. The power cut began on 19 February in the heart of the city.
Have enough water available to last several days.Fill a plastic-covered container with emergency supplies such as: Flashlights and fresh batteries, Candles and matches in a water-resistant package away from flammables. A battery-operated or hand-crank powered radio. A corded telephone. First aid kit.
The blackouts are typically for one hour, then the power is restored and another area is turned off. Hospitals, airport control towers, police stations, and fire departments are often exempt from these rolling blackouts.
Turn on the water supply. Close lowest valves/taps first and allow air to escape from upper taps. Make sure that the hot water heater is filled before turning on the power to it. Check food supplies in refrigerators, freezers and cupboards for signs of spoilage.
