Pictured below: The most famous newspaper Blackout Poem ever created was from the 1929 edition of The New York Times; it quotes a poem by Emmett Lee Dickinson: Because I could not stop for debt, he kindly stopped for me.
The purpose of Blackout Poetry is to draw a new meaning from something initially made by another mind. Many blackout poets try to derive almost an opposite meaning from their starting block of text, using words to string together a new story from the initial one given.
Well-crafted blackout poetry can give new meanings to old texts. In addition to the words themselves, often times the artwork created by blacking out words can also contribute to the poems meaning. Some examples of found sources include: newspapers, magazines, books, and journals.
Comparably, blackout poets like Austin Kleon, Tom Phillips, and OHare do not use a knife to disfigure their source texts but rather a pen (or in Phillipss case everything from a pen to a paintbrush to collaged photographs) to cover them.
Blackout poetry, also known as erasure or redacted poetry, are all types of found poetry. Specifically, found poetry has a goal of using pre-existing or found text to create something new. Portions of the original text are kept, while other parts are drawn over or crossed out.
In 1966, a man named Tom Phillips started making A Humument, which is arguably one of the most well known works of blackout poetry today, because of a bet.
Langston Hughes was an innovator of Jazz poetry, a prolific writer and one of the principal voices of the Harlem Renaissance. In 1921, his poem, The Negro Speaks of Rivers, was published in The Crisis. In 1924 Hughes received an Opportunity award for first prize in poetry for The Wary Blues.
The story of blackout poetry, also known as found poetry or erasure poetry, is a fascinating journey that involves the creative minds of writers like Austin Kleon and artist Tom Phillips.
