Em space is a unit of measurement in typography, particularly in the digital realm. It is equivalent to the point size of the current font. For example, if youre using a 12-point font, one em space would be 12 points wide.
The answer is in the em square: the transparent canvas on which each glyph is drawn and which was originally based on the proportions of an uppercase M character. Its also sometimes called the glyph space or em size and is a cartesian grid space, with an origin on the left edge that creates the baseline.
Wide or extended typefaces are those with characters that typically take up a great deal of horizontal space, sitting at the opposite end of the spectrum from condensed or compressed type.
It means emphemeral unit which is relative to the current font size. For example, if the current font size was set to 16px, then the bottom padding would be set to 160px.
The height of the type piece is known as the em, and it originates from the width of the uppercase M character; it was made so that the proportions of this letter would be square (hence the em square denomination). The em size is what the point size of metal type is calculated upon.
1em means equal to the current font size, and 2em means 2 times the current font size. (For example in a 2em unit of measurement, if your font is 11px (11 pixels), then 2em equals 22 pixels.)
