From the brilliant blog, I Love Typography: The first Modern typeface is attributed to Frenchman Firmin Didot, and first graced the printed page in 1784.
Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press, is credited with creating the first font in the 15th century. He designed a typeface that was used to print the Gutenberg Bible, which was completed in 1455. This typeface, known as Gutenbergs type, was used for many years and was the standard for printed books.
Firmin was inspired by Baskervilles typeface and took his experiments in letterform to the extreme, designing his first font in 1784. This font, regarded as the first Modern typeface, has high contrast between thick and thin strokes, hairline serifs with no bracketing, and vertical stress in rounded strokes.
Textura. Textualis, also known as textura or Gothic bookhand, was the most calligraphic form of blackletter, and today is the form most associated with Gothic. Johannes Gutenberg carved a textualis typefaceincluding a large number of ligatures and common abbreviationswhen he printed his 42-line Bible.
The first typeface was a Blackletter variety used by Johannes Gutenberg on the first printing press, starting in 1440. This typeface design was created to mimic the calligraphic handwriting used by monks to hand-transcribe manuscripts prior to the invention of the printing press.
Blackletter typefaces originated in Western Europe during the Middle Ages, around the 12th century. Blackletter (also known as Gothic script or Textura) developed from Carolingian Minuscule, the lettering style prevalent at the time. Blackletter text was quicker to write than Carolingian Minuscule.
