How to Blackout Poetry Find a newspaper article, and old book or a magazine that you feel comfortable destroying. Skim the passage and keep your eye out for that eye-catching word that will guide the theme of your poem. Read the poem in its entirety. Make your final decisions and black out the rest of the poem!
Blackout poems can be created using the pages of old books or even articles cut from yesterdays newspaper. Using the pages of an existing text, blackout poets isolate then piece together single words or short phrases from these texts to create lyrical masterpieces.
Blackout Poetry Start with a page from any text and ask students to choose words from that text to create a poem. They black out any words they dont want in their poem with a marker. They then rewrite all the remaining words into a poem.
Pictured below: The most famous newspaper Blackout Poem ever created was from the 1929 edition of The New York Times; it quotes a poem by Emmett Lee Dickinson: Because I could not stop for debt, he kindly stopped for me.
All you need to do is: Identify the text you want to use. Make note of meaningful words, phrases, or ideas. Mark out the text you wish to exclude from your poem. You can blackout text with lines or even drawings.
Blackout poetry does not have to rhyme another plus that students find liberating. The great thing is that your students will be looking at language, word choice, imagery, mood, figurative language, and theme as they create their own poems!
Blackout poetry is a process of narrowing down the words you dont want, then selecting and arranging the words that are left. As such, the first thing you should do with your marker is draw boxes around the words you want to keep. Of course, you can box a word in the beginning and cross it out later.
