While black spots on wood are usually caused by water damage, they can also be caused by a mix of water and iron, mould or even burn marks. Having an idea what caused the spot can help you decide how to treat the spot.
Penofin turned the deck black If your deck turned black after applying Penofin, chances are its not actually Penofins fault. As explained above, it is probably because the Penofin wasnt properly wiped after application or the naturally-occurring tannins in the wood have crept to the surface.
The product may flash (like oil in a hot pan) and dry on the surface. This will eventually cause darkening, and the coat will chip and peel. If your nose is cold, it is too cold to apply Penofin. The product will not penetrate the wood as efficiently at colder temperatures and the application will not last as long.
Here are two methods to try: Sand the dark stain with 100-grit sandpaper. To blend in the area, feather the edges with 150-grit sandpaper. Wearing rubber gloves, dip a brush into a bowl of bleach and apply it lightly to the stained area. Allow the bleach to sit for a few hours as the stain fades to its original color.
If youre fighting with black spots, heres our process for winning: Spray Tannin Spot Neutralizer evenly on the stain directly from the bottle. Leave the solution to dissolve the stain and dirt, etc. Wipe with a cloth wrung in lukewarm water. Repeat if necessary. Use wood oil to finish and protect the surface.
The biggest reason for a deck stain turning black is mildew. All wood surfaces need to be cleaned correctly prior to staining. The use of a quality wood cleaner and pressure washer or scrub brush is necessary to remove all the contaminants like dirt, grime, mold, mildew, and graying.
Whether youve gone for cheap decking or something sturdier and longer-lasting, blackening is a risk, especially after a long, wet winter. When fungus meets wet wood, the tannin in the timber reacts and forms a horrible black stain.
