Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is determined as a tumor marker for hepatocellular carcinoma and yolk sac tumors. Recently, cases of gastrointestinal cancer with elevated serum AFP levels have been reported.
AFP alone is inadequate for screening purposes because of the high rate of false positives in active hepatitis; it has only 40-64% sensitivity because many tumors do not produce AFP at all or do so only at a very advanced stage.
A False Positive Result: A final possibility is that the baby has no health problems. Some babies who are healthy produce more AFP than average. This is often the cause for false positive AFP tests.
A slightly elevated (6‑19 ng/ml) AFP level may be a risk factor for HCC in certain cases. By contrast, AFP levels
Alpha-fetoprotein tumor marker Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is the most widely used tumor marker for detecting liver cancer. However, other cancers and certain conditions, including pregnancy, hepatitis, and other types of cancer, may also increase AFP levels.
AFP is measured in nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL), with normal levels less than 20 ng/mL. Levels above 400 ng/mL may indicate a liver tumor or other cancer. Elevated levels of AFP may indicate cancer of the liver, ovaries or testicles, but that isnt always the case.
The study by Harada T, et al. [39] showed that approximately 40% of all cirrhotic patients will have AFP levels higher than 20 ng/ml. An increase in AFP levels (between 10 and 500 ng/ml, and sometimes up to 1000 ng/ml) can be seen in adult patients with hepatitis or cirrhosis with any etiology.
Generally, an AFP level between 0 ng/mL to 10 ng/ml or even up to 40 ng/mL can be normal for adults But normal levels vary, so talk with your healthcare provider about what your results mean for you. An extremely high level of AFP in your bloodgreater than 400 ng/mLcould be a sign of liver tumors.
