Most experienced shelter workers will tell you that black dogs are often adopted less than any other coat color. Be it black Labrador Retrievers, Shepherds, Rottweilers, etc., they are often passed over by potential adopters.
Ask a Lot of Questions The rescue wants to know that youre committed to providing a forever home. Put together a list of questions you have about the animal. Youll want to ask about any behavioral or health issues that will need to be addressed and be prepared to explain how youll handle them.
You work outside the home. Yes, this is often a reason for denying pet adoptions. Youre pregnant. There is a sound reasoning behind this one, but it doesnt affect every adopter. You have children under six years old. Im a firm believer in not adopting toy dogs to a home with children under six.
Movies and television shows often portray big, black dogs as aggressive and intimidating, which could also convince potential adopters to avoid them. Some believe it could come down to how photogenic dogs are. Notoriously, black dogs do not photograph well. Lighter-colored dogs, on the other hand, do.
Dogs are also colour blind to red and green so their range of vision is limited. Compared to humans, dogs usually have superior low light sensitivity and peripheral vision. For these reasons, it is more difficult for dogs to recognise the facial expressions of black dogs.
You can tell the person, No, thank you. I know that pets require a lot of time, money and patience and right now, I do not have either one of these attributes. Good luck in finding your pet a new home.
ing to many of those involved, rescues and shelters frequently see potential adopters showing less interest in black-coated dogs (large or small), therefore making black dogs harder to place in forever homes.
In addition to the stigmas of bad luck and witchcraft, black animals also face a tough time being adopted because their dark coats often lead to poor photos. Being less photogenic means theyre more likely to be overlooked by potential adopters.
