hi everyone chris here with blind appeal hope youre all having a great day today were going to talk about room darkening or blackout shades [Applause] stay tuned [Applause] [Music] so what are blackout shades blackout shades are anything that essentially does not allow any light to penetrate through the material uh aka blackout shades now before moving forward i want to point out that any window coverings is going to be installed inside the window frame is going to have what we call a halo effect which is basically a light gap along the edges which means its not going to block out 100 but at least most of it you can reduce the light gaps even more with light blocking side channels which are attached to the edge of the window frame however some people may find these in eyesore or too industrial and bulky but its all preference so what shades do come in blackout shades pretty much everything except for forward blinds but with blinds although they do keep out a good amount theres sti

Blackout refers to a foam-backed, opaque fabric used to black out light. Blackout fabrics are most commonly found in hotel rooms as curtain linings or drapery fabrics, blocking much of the light that would otherwise enter through a window when the curtains are closed.
In World War II, a dark blackout curtain was used to keep the light inside. Tarring the windows can mean a semi-permanent blackout status. During the 1940s and 1950s, cities such as Detroit would practise blackout air raid drills.
If Youre Using The Blackout Fabric As A Curtain Lining With Blackout fabric linings the hems should be as short as possible 1-2cm on all four sides, this will enable the curtains and the blackout lining to work much better at blocking out the light.
Step 1: Cut and Lay Out Fabric. Iron the curtain panel and lay it on the floor, right side up. Step 2: Sew Sides. Sew the sides together with a 5/8-inch seam allowance, which should put the seam just inside the original curtains side hem. Step 3: Iron Seams. Step 4: Make Rod Casing. Step 5: Hem and Finish.
You can easily hem curtains (and other materials that dont need a lot of washing) with iron-on hem tape. Hem tape is a roll of fabric like polyester that melts and bonds to the fabric when heated with an iron or steam, keeping it together like a hem.
This fabric is perfect for lining curtains or blinds to make them blackout. As with all of our fabrics, this fabric can be cut to size and wont fray, so there is no need to hem.
Measure the desired length of your curtain and mark it. Cut the fabric tape to match the width of your curtain hem. Fold the curtain to the desired length and sandwich the fabric tape between the folds. Use a warm iron to press over the tape, activating the adhesive.
Blackout blinds are designed to block light passing through the fabric and provide extra privacy in your home. They are most suited for bedrooms and rooms with screens, such as living rooms and offices, as the blackout fabric help prevents light shining onto the screens.
