CPAP Mask Tips and Tricks Try a full-face mask. You might be waking up due to a lost seal when your mouth opens. Though smaller masks might seem more appealing, they are not always the most comfortable. If drooling is a problem for you, try stuffing some tissue into the bottom of your mask.
Following are simple tips to fix the most common reasons for mask leaks. Clean Your Mask. Put on Your Mask After Lying Down. Adjust the Fit After Lying Down. Make Sure Your Mask Is Right for Your Sleeping Position. Discuss Your CPAP Air Pressure With Your Doctor. Replace Your Cushion or Mask.

No, you should not breathe through your mouth with or without a CPAP machine. Mouth breathing weakens airway anatomy and can cause breathing to stop and start repeatedly through the night. A continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine provides a steady flow of oxygen into your nose.
Most CPAP users discover a mask leak when the escaping air blows into their eyes, creating an irritating hissing sound and causing dry mouth or sore throat. With smaller leaks, users may not see such obvious signs. They may notice that their therapy doesnt seem quite as effective as it once did.
Mild to moderately affected mouth breathers may be able to solve the open mouth problem by using a simple, inexpensive chinstrap that gently holds the jaw securely shut, promoting breathing through the nose. Others may always need to use a full face CPAP mask to get full benefits from their sleep apnea treatment.
What causes CPAP mask leak? Mask leak can be caused by one of three things: your mask is the wrong size or incorrectly fitted, youre wearing the wrong mask for your sleep style, or your mask needs to be cleaned or maintained.
A heated humidifier, a chinstrap, and mask cushions may help resolve specific concerns about dry mouth or mask discomfort. You can also talk to your doctor if you want to try a different mask or explore other CPAP accessories. Be consistent: Even if it feels challenging at first, use the CPAP device as prescribed.
