And keep your words visible. Or you could just choose to block out sections.
Identifying a Source Text Many blackout poetry examples use literary sourcesthe three examples we chose were from a book, newspaper, and letter, respectively.
The Magnum Sharpie! This size Sharpie is great for blacking out the rest of the page without using up your smaller Sharpies. If youve made a blackout poem before you know what Im talking about. The smaller Sharpies tend to dry up quick when youre making multiple blackout poems.
If you arent familiar with blackout poetry, the general idea is to use text from an existing written work to create a poem by strategically covering some words from the text. This written work could be another poem, newspaper article, or page from an old book, so theres lots of room for flexibility and creativity.
How to Blackout Poetry Find a newspaper article, and old book or a magazine that you feel comfortable destroying. Skim the passage and keep your eye out for that eye-catching word that will guide the theme of your poem. Read the poem in its entirety. Make your final decisions and black out the rest of the poem!
Pictured below: The most famous newspaper Blackout Poem ever created was from the 1929 edition of The New York Times; it quotes a poem by Emmett Lee Dickinson: Because I could not stop for debt, he kindly stopped for me.
First thing you have to do is decide on a text youll like to work with. Many modern blackout poets use articles found online, but you can also use old books, other poems, newspapers, magazines whatever you can find that features words you can blackout! This is where your initial inspiration comes into play.
Can the poem be read linearly, from left to right? Or do you want certain words to connect in different directions? If the words should be read out of order, consider leaving white space to demonstrate reading order. This is not a requirement of blackout poetry, but it is something to consider.
