Bruising and Tenderness. The injury that causes an ACL tear can also lead to a deep bone bruise, which occurs when the ligaments tear, and your bones shift against each other. With an ACL tear, the bruise usually occurs on the lateral border of the bone.
An ACL tear is when the anterior cruciate ligament becomes partially or completely ruptured. Most ACL tears are complete tears and can be torn from the femur (thighbone), tibia (shin bone), or in the center of the ligament. The most common location for a tear is the center of the ligament.
ACL injuries often happen during sports and fitness activities that can put stress on the knee: Suddenly slowing down and changing direction (cutting) Pivoting with your foot firmly planted. Landing awkwardly from a jump.
Signs and symptoms of an ACL injury usually include: A loud pop or a popping sensation in the knee. Severe pain and inability to continue activity. Rapid swelling. Loss of range of motion. A feeling of instability or giving way with weight bearing.
Surgery for an ACL Injury We consider non-surgical treatments first, but if the tear is complete and the knee is unstable, or the knee doesnt heal with non-surgical treatment, surgery may be necessary. The ACL cannot heal on its own because there is no blood supply to this ligament.
The ACL can be injured or torn in a number of different ways. The most common mechanism is that of a sudden pivoting or cutting maneuver during sporting activity, which is commonly seen in football, basketball and soccer. The ligament can also tear due to work injuries or automobile accidents.
The short answer is yes. After the pain and swelling subsides and if there is no other injury to your knee, you may be able to walk in straight lines, go up and down stairs and even potentially jog in a straight line. The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is an important ligament that provides stability to the knee.
An ACL injury often occurs during sports when your foot is firmly planted and a sudden force hits your knee while your leg is straight or slightly bent. This can happen when you change direction rapidly or land from a jump.
