Narrator: Saturday, 12 p.m., the light burns, your head throbs, and you have no recollection of how you got back home. Donamp;#39;t worry, youamp;#39;re not alone. More than half of college students experience blackouts, ing to several studies. And letamp;#39;s be clear, blacking out doesnamp;#39;t mean passing out. You were probably awake and aware the entire night. So then, where did all those memories go? Letamp;#39;s rewind to Friday night. Normally, whenever you have an experience, like a conversation, a part of your brain called the prefrontal cortex stores that information in short-term memory. Then, another part of your brain called the hippocampus weaves those experiences together, so they can be stored away as long-term memories. So the next day, you remember the party as a whole, instead of smell of sweat, house music, Jen was there. But hereamp;#39;s the key part. Most unexplained blackouts are caused by syncope Many people, including doctors, assume that blackouts are due to epileptic seizures, but much more commonly they are due to syncope (pronounced sin-co-pee) a type of blackout which is caused by a problem in the regulation of blood pressure or sometimes with the heart.
How are blackouts diagnosed? a physical examination. blood pressure testing. blood tests to check your blood sugar levels. an electrocardiogram (ECG) an echocardiogram. an exercise stress test. tilt table testing.
After a while, the table is tilted to a position similar to standing. A tilt table test shows how the body reacts to changes in position. It can help find the cause of fainting or dizziness. The test is often used when fainting happens for no known reason.
If you have had a complete blackout, you will likely not be able to remember anything from the experience. With a fragmentary blackout, you may have some recollection of events, and you may be able to recall certain memories with cueing (meaning verbal or visual reminders of the events).
SHORT TERM MEMORY TEST A person in a blackout will not remember something that happened a few minutes ago. Thus, if the person doesnt seem to know what you are talking about or has no memory of what happened, assume they are in a blackout and do NOT leave them alone.
Examples from Collins dictionaries She had driven ambulances during the blackouts of the Second World War. Journalists said there was a virtual news blackout about the rally. There was an electricity black-out in a large area in the north of the country. I suffered a black-out which lasted for several minutes.
Some people use the terms blackout and fainting interchangeably, but they are different things. A blackout is a loss of memory. Fainting, also called passing out, is a loss of consciousness. Both of these can have several different causes.
