Brownouts and Blackouts: What is a Blackout? A blackout is a complete interruption of power in a given service area. Rolling blackouts are controlled and usually preplanned interruptions of service. A brownout is a partial, temporary reduction in system voltage or total system capacity.
There are many causes for why power outages occur. However, the three most common causes are natural causes, human error, and overload. Basically, any interruption between power generation and the supply of electricity to homes can cause a power outage.
Extreme Weather Most power outages are caused by severe weather high winds, lightning, rain or flooding. During a storm power poles are vulnerable to lightning strikes while strong winds can snap off tree branches and down power lines.
Timeline of the Blackout The lead up to the blackout started on the evening of July 13, 1977 when lightning hit the Buchanan South substation at 8:37 pm, tripping two circuit breakers. A second strike caused two transmission lines at the Indian Point Energy Center to go down and overloaded two other transmission lines.
A BLACK OUT is the purposeful creation of an environment in which an all-Black-identifying audience can experience and discuss an event in the performing arts, film, athletic, and cultural spaces free from the white gaze.
More common reasons for blackouts are weather-related. Wildfires, hurricanes, thunderstorms and snowstorms can bring down power lines or disrupt electricity generation, causing blackouts. Even extreme cold on its own can cause the power grid to go down.
Alcohol-related blackouts are gaps in a persons memory for events that occurred while they were intoxicated. These gaps happen when a person drinks enough alcohol to temporarily block the transfer of memories from short-term to long-term storageknown as memory consolidationin a brain area called the hippocampus.
A blackout is a temporary loss of consciousness. Blackouts can be caused by fainting, low blood pressure, or something more serious. If you have a blackout, its best to see your doctor.
