At dusk on November 9, 1965, one of the biggest power failures in history occurs as all of New York state, portions of seven nearby states, and parts of eastern Canada are plunged into darkness.
The blackout, which lasted for about 14 hours, was caused by a faulty relay in the Adam Beck Station of Ontario, Canada. Traffic lights ceased working, making travel by cars and busses extremely difficult. Trains carrying passengers were stuck in tunnels and many were stuck in elevators.
The ambient maximum temperature in NYC was 91.0F on the day of the blackout and 89.1F on the day after the blackout. In addition to the very high outdoor temperature, the loss of air conditioning and mechanical ventilation caused indoor temperatures to rise, leaving people with no respite from the outdoor heat.
A subsequent report on the causes of the blackout blamed Ohio-based FirstEnergy Corporation. After coming in contact with some overgrown trees, power lines from a FirstEnergy generating plant in a suburb of Cleveland had shut down.
We return this month with our series of the 10 Biggest Disasters in the History of New York City with a look at a local problem that was felt throughout the nation; the 1977 blackout. The blackout occurred at approximately 9:30 pm on July 13, 1977 and left most of New York City without power for 25 hours.
New York City experienced a blackout once again in August 2003 as power went out through much of the northeast U.S. However, New Yorkers came together during the 2003 blackout and there was very little crime during the 30 hours that the power was out.
On Aug. 14, 2003, however, a major power outage left about 50 million people across the Northeast in darkness -- with New York City largely at a standstill. August 14, 2003 is remembered as a hot, sticky summer day.
