Just because its called blackout lining it isnt black in colour! Lining to make black out curtains is available in white and cream.
How to use black out lining. Black out linings can be sewn into a curtain like any other lining. You just need to remember to face the fabric side to the window and the coated side to the fabric. Alternatively you can also make a loose lining for existing curtains.
The most effective blackout fabrics Most blackout curtain fabrics use polyester as a solo material or combine it with other fabrics. Polyester is a synthetic fabric that boasts affordability, durability, and superior light-blocking qualities.
A very heavy pair of upholstery weight velvet curtains with a blackout lining would work best with a 110/18 Universal or Microtex needle. The idea is to match the right weight with the right type of needle to ensure you get the best results for your project.
Instructions Measure your existing curtains: Before purchasing supplies, measure the length and width of your curtains. Add blackout fabric to back of curtains: Measure iron-on adhesive and sandwich between curtain and blackout fabric: Pin, apply heat, and press and hold iron: Hang and trim excess:
With Blackout fabric linings the hems should be as short as possible 1-2cm on all four sides, this will enable the curtains and the blackout lining to work much better at blocking out the light.
Step 1: Cut and Lay Out Fabric. Iron the curtain panel and lay it on the floor, right side up. Step 2: Sew Sides. Sew the sides together with a 5/8-inch seam allowance, which should put the seam just inside the original curtains side hem. Step 3: Iron Seams. Step 4: Make Rod Casing. Step 5: Hem and Finish.
Ive used regular sharp needles number 12 or 14, denim needles would work as well. Use a cotton cloth when pressing and a medium heat, just in case. Blackout fabric has got a lot thinner over the years, when I first made blackout curtains it was often really thick. Now I just treat it like normal lining fabric.
