Windows doesnt have an option to protect your zipped file with a password, so theres no other way but to use third-party tools. You can choose from various trusted software options, such as WinZip, WinRAR(read more about safely using WinRAR), and 7-Zip.
To remove encryption from the files that have been zipped, they would need to be extracted using the correct password. WinZip uses the password in combination with the appropriate key to decrypt the zipped data and recreate exact byte-for-byte duplicates of the originals.
Encrypt a zip file with Windows Right-click or press and hold the zip file you want to encrypt. Select Properties. Click the Advanced button and check the box next to Encrypt contents to secure data. Select OK to close the Advanced Attributes window and then select Apply. Click OK.
Password protected Zip files are pretty vulnerable to brute force /rainbow dictionary type attacks since the file can be copied infinite times and attacked in parallel if required. Its unlikely theyll crack the encryption, rather theyd go for the keys/password.
Right-click on the zip folder you want to encrypt. Alternately, you can press and hold on the file when using touch-enabled devices. Select Properties from the new menu and click Advanced. Choose the Encrypt Contents to Secure Data Box option.
Fear not, if you have lost your password, you can first try to open your Zip file with CMD to open password protected Zip file: Step 1. Download the John the Ripper from its official website and extract your Zip file ( it is an open-source tool, so feel free to it).
How to password-protect a ZIP file on Windows Right-click the ZIP file you want to protect with a password. Choose Properties and then Advanced. Select Encrypt contents to secure data. Click Apply. Decide which ZIP file elements you want to encrypt.
Protect a document with a password Go to File Info Protect Document Encrypt with Password. Type a password, press OK, type it again and press OK to confirm it. Save the file to make sure the password takes effect.
