Instead of displaying original characters, either asterisk (*) or dots (.) are shown when a password is entered. Thus the entered characters are masked or hidden. To make a textbox that can hide the entered characters, the type attribute of element should be set to password.
There is no way to mask the text that is entered. Rather than using such a clunky script, use a proper login form - use an [^] for both the username and the password, with type=password for the password input.
A masked password is an obscure string representation of a real password. To mask a password a user will use an codec. The codec takes in the real password and outputs the masked version. A user can then replace the real password in the configuration files with the new masked password.
