This form of redacted poetry has a long history. In the 1760s, Caleb Whitefoord found humorous, coincidental jokes in his newspapers by reading the articles not from the top down, as intended, but from left to right, combining the articles in unexpectded ways.
The words that they leave visible create a poem. For example, a writer might select a newspaper article and erase everything but a few words per paragraph. When one reads these remaining words from top to bottom they create a poem. Blackout poetry is a form of found poetry.
In fact, the earliest known blackout poetry examples hail from Benjamin Franklin's days. Ben's neighbor, Caleb Whiteford, would publish redacted versions of the paper, using puns flowing across the text to create new meaning in the pages. You can learn more about Whiteford in this TEDxKC talk with Austin Kleon.
History of Blackout Poetry Austin Kleon, a Texas-based writer, found that there was a different way of reading passages than what others were used to. He started to pick words from a daily newspaper and to black out with a marker the ones that he didn't like.
The great thing about blackout poetry is that the poem can be quite abstract, it does not have to rhyme, it does not need any particular amount of lines and that's why it is great for students who “think” they cannot write poetry. The final words in the poem must be in order, they cannot be moved around.

“Blackout poems can be created using the pages of old books or even articles cut from yesterday's newspaper. Using the pages of an existing text, blackout poets isolate then piece together single words or short phrases from these texts to create lyrical masterpieces.
Others who have created blackout poetry include Mary Ruefle, Janet Holmes, Will Ashford, Tristan Tzara, Jochen Gerner, and hundreds, if not thousands, of poets easily found online but not famous. This art form truly belongs to everyone!
Blackout Poetry is the name of any sort of poem that is derived from blacking out any unwanted words from a paragraph, book, sign, etc.
Blackout poetry also helps enhance focus because of the precision it requires; if you paint over a word you wanted to use, there's no going back. Sometimes, I tend to self-diagnose myself with writer's block when I really just need to sit down and get it done.
