Blackouts that might be serious Heart rhythm problems can cause faints because the heart no longer pumps effectively and the blood pressure drops. The features to look out for are: They can happen at any time, whether you are standing sitting or lying. There is no trigger, it can happen without any obvious cause.
While most syncopal events are innocuous, cardiac syncope is often indicative of a potentially fatal, underlying disease process, carrying a one-year mortality rate of 30%. Distinguishing cardiac syncope from the myriad of other syncopal etiologies can be challenging.
There are many types of cardiac arrhythmias that may cause syncope. These include bradyarrhythmias (the heart beats too slowly) and tachyarrhythmias (the heart beats too fast). Aortic dissection, a tear in the large artery that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
Treatments for blackouts Fast heart rhythms that cause blackouts, may be dangerous/life threatening. Treatment can include: Preventing the rhythm - with medication that slow or control the heart rhythm such as betablockers.
Congestive heart failure is a long-term condition that happens when your heart cant pump blood well enough to give your body a normal supply. Blood and fluids collect in your lungs and legs over time. Medications and other treatments help manage symptoms like swelling.
Fainting spells can sometimes be the first warning sign of an undiagnosed heart disease. Heart conditions associated with fainting can include: Arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeat, including bradycardia (too slow) or tachycardia (too fast)
What is a blackout? A blackout is a temporary loss of consciousness. It may also be called: fainting (syncope)
All cases of cardiac syncope have the same general mechanism. When the heart fails to generate adequate cardiac output, the brain is inadequately perfused and temporarily malfunctions, leading to the syncopal event. Bradyarrhythmias lead to this final pathway because the heart is too slow to generate enough flow.
